My Personal Philosophy Statement
Purpose of Teaching…
My purpose of teaching is to shape future generations and to be a mentor for those students. I will teach to make a difference in the lives of my students and give them a passion for learning. In my classroom, I will believe in my students and value student-focused teaching methods by allowing my students to discover knowledge about what they want to learn about, and by doing projects.
Relationship With Students/Parents…
As a teacher, I expect my students to try their very best on all of their work, as I will always have high expectations for them. This will occur by setting an example to my students when putting my full effort into them and their learning. I expect honesty and respect, and they should expect that from me. Our goal as a class is to grow academically, personally, and with our relationships inside our classroom community. I will help my students challenge themselves and strive to become the best versions they can possibly be. I will praise effort, be open-minded, and work to create lifelong, professional relationships with my students. Students can expect me to teach unconditionally, be passionate about teaching, and to be prepared everyday. I will set my classroom up to create a safe place for all of my students, where they can come to me, knowing that I am there for them and am on their team. With parents, I will define myself as a teacher early, and will keep parents involved throughout the entire year.
Understanding of Teaching and Learning…
Students learn best using different learning styles. As a teacher, I will discover how my students learn best, and make sure to incorporate their learning style into each lesson that I create—this will all begin by knowing my students. Students will also learn in my classroom through self-discovery and interdisciplinary lessons. I will embrace failure and help students understand that failure ultimately leads to growth and success. As a teacher, I am bound to fail in front of my students. This will be an important time to reveal to my students that it is normal to fail and that it is okay to make a mistake, as long as you are willing to learn and grow from it. When a student fails in my classroom, I will tell them that they have an exciting opportunity to prove to themself that they can learn even more and understand the content even better than before! In my classroom, failure won’t be looked down upon, but rather it will be treated as a learning opportunity to continue to grow academically and emotionally.
Classroom Environment…
I will create a classroom environment where brain breaks will occur between every subject; where students monitor each other; where behavior charts will be put into place; and where students will set expectations and rules for themselves. I will establish a classroom environment at the beginning of the year and use positive reinforcement to continue to build my relationships with my students. I will channel disruptions into something positive and will address issues before they can occur. When there is a problem, I will recognize the problem, remove the problem, and understand why there was a problem. Furthermore, I will make sure that I can see all of my students at all times and will make transitions between subjects smooth so there is little time to be off-task.
Motivation…
I will motivate my students by creating a positive learning community to encourage experimentation, freedom of choice, and accountability. Furthermore, I will tie assignments to real life learning and make it interdisciplinary, too. In my classroom, the use service learning will be incorporated into our curriculum because it teaches several life skills and helps create a well-rounded individual. I will also be excited and enthusiastic about teaching, which in turn, will make my students excited to learn. Lastly, I will use intrinsic and extrinsic rewards in my classroom to further build my relationship with my students and to motivate them to continue to give their best.
Assessment…
In my classroom, students will be assessed through both formative and summative assessments. I will give my students visual progress and feedback throughout the year on how they are growing academically and personally. I will have a growth mindset for my students and focus on their growth as a student over the entire year, instead of focusing on their scores on state assessments. My students worth will not come from state assessments, but rather from reaching goals we have set together for each student.
Personal Growth…
As a teacher, I will continuously be learning on how to improve my teaching skills and will model this to my students. Personal growth is an important aspect because acknowledging my own failures in the past will allow me to know how to respond and grow from those failures for the future. I will go to conferences, use online resources, continue my education through classes, and get my Master’s Degree to continue to grow as a teacher. If I expect my students to grow as individuals, they should expect me to continue to grow as an educator, also. I want to be the best I can be for my students; one way I can do this, is by continuing my education and personal growth through classes, lectures, and so forth.
Inclusiveness…
In my classroom, I will be aware of each student’s identity of culture and ethnicity, and will value each student equitably. I will do activities in class that help my students to share about their identity and to celebrate and embrace their differences. I will become more knowledgeable about diversity and be aware of the different backgrounds that my students come from. Overall, I will understand my bias as a teacher and work to teach equitably to every student that walks into my classroom door.
